The Perfect Plan

Ready to go

As I write this, beside me sits my perfect plan for the year. I have my soil samples back, seed varieties and population decided, fertility plan lined up, a few marketing strategies in place, and parts for the equipment ready to be put on. I always type up a document listing my plans field by field to keep track of it all. All that’s left is for the growing season to get here, so I can execute the plan I have in place. BioBuilder.

Foiled plans

But my perfect plan is always foiled by the end of the year. Excess rain, too little rain, wind, hail, equipment malfunctions, family commitments. It’s always something that comes up that I don’t have control over. The drought of 2022 in Western Kansas was the driest on record for most. No matter what I have in place, when it doesn’t rain, crops fail. The next year started off excessively wet, only for 90% of the farm to get hailed out. We work in an occupation with Mother Nature as our friend and our foe. BioBuilder.

Enjoy The Challenge

additionally, I thoroughly enjoy the challenges and rewards that farming has to offer. I enjoy the planning process and always get excited to see how the year is going to go. In fact I’ve learned not to get tied to my plans and to be flexible. Planting later, switching crops, and a change from grain to silage are all part of my plan B, and sometimes C and D that I have to switch to.

Plan Flexibly

I have found peace in building the flexibility in from the beginning. I order quite a bit of my seed in bags so I can send it back if needed. This year I will blend my BioBuilder field by field so that I can adjust for my field goals, as well as being able to roll with the punches when rain puts a pause on my planting schedule. I try not to put pre-emerge herbicide down that locks me into one crop. This year I am planning on side dressing all my nitrogen so I can evaluate the crop, soil moisture, long-term forecast and then decide my amount applied right before I head to the field.  Little things like these let me audible to plan B without an issue.

Embrace the chaos

I’m a guy that can get caught up in how things are going wrong, which seems to happen frequently on my farm. However, this article isn’t meant to be negative about how farming can have challenges. Rather, I hope it’s an encouragement to embrace the chaos that always seems to show up, and to make the most of it. With plenty of moisture this winter, and a few days of warm weather starting to come around. I’m excited as ever to get into the fields and get the growing season underway!
