Working ON Your Business Rather Than IN Your Business

“If you work hard, you’ll make a good living!”

Anyone ever hear that from the generations before you? If you’re like me, you probably got tired of hearing that. It seemed like the more times changed, the harder it got to make money.  We’d look back on “the good ole days” when the generation before us could work their tail off and make dang good money without having to spend much time working ON the business. Obviously today, this principle doesn’t apply.

In our operation, it was always easier and more comfortable to go work outside — even in the heat or blowing snow — than it was to sit down in the office and attempt to actually work ON the business. By getting your hands dirty and doing the day-to-day physical labor, you felt like you were actually getting something accomplished because it was so easy to see the direct results of those actions verses working on the business, since those results are not immediately seen.

When I say working ON the business, what does that mean to you? For me, working ON the business is a matter of actually taking the time to be in the office, not only keeping up on the “book work” as we all say, but taking the time to focus on the important things that will ultimately propel your business forward in the future. That includes looking at your crop plans and how they align with your marketing plans, or looking at your cashflow projections and seeing how they also align with your marketing plan. I’d even say taking the time to look into the future and how you can set your operation up to handle adversity, especially in a year where all winter we’ve been talking gloom and doom about the negative price projections and breakeven analysis.  Taking the time for these tasks is crucial for the sustainability of your operation or business.

You might be thinking, “All those things sound great, but I’ve never taken the time to do any of them.” Thereby making those tasks uncomfortable or not easy. And as we all know, it’s easier to take the path of least resistance. So consider this: What does the future of your operation look like a year from now or even 5 years from now without someone being dedicated to working ON the business?

Most of us in our operations or businesses never seem to slow down, but as we get into the busier time of year, I think it’s important to keep a balance between working IN your business and working ON it. In the words of Pretzer “Working with a pencil is just as important as working with one’s back!”

As much as we all love to plant the crop, nurture it, watch it grow, and then finally see what each row yields; we need to keep in mind, does all the hard work, blood, sweat, and tears really matter at the end of the day if we don’t take the time to manage the operation properly?

Yucca acts as a natural surfactant, wetting agent, and plant bio-stimulant and is derived from a flowering desert plant.  Yucca has been shown to reduce plant stress from drought, heat and salinity.  It increases plant cell wall gas, and liquid exchange.  Applications to soil will assist in the infiltration and absorption of water and nutrients.  Yucca mixes well with most products. As always, jar testing is recommended before application.

Sugar’s general purpose is to supply a food source for soil microorganisms and support plant growth.  Active microbes will help to make soil nutrients more plant available.  Sugars also work in residue decomposition.  It is compatible with most products and can be used with a starter, foliar application or soil application.  As always, jar testing to ensure compatibility is recommended.
